This page explains the criteria and scoring system we use to evaluate squirrel baffles, squirrel-proof feeders, and related bird-feeding products.

1. The Backyard Feeder Guide Squirrel-Proof Score (SPS)

Every product we cover in a roundup or comparison gets a Squirrel-Proof Score (SPS) out of 10, built from five weighted criteria:

  • Squirrel-proofing design (35%): how the product’s mechanism is built to block or deter squirrels, dome/baffle diameter, weight-activated closures, cage spacing on feeders, and similar design factors.
  • Setup compatibility (20%): how many common setups it fits out of the box, 4×4 posts, shepherd hooks, straight poles, hanging feeders, and whether an adapter is needed.
  • Durability & materials (20%): metal versus plastic construction, weather and chew resistance, and reported long-term durability.
  • Ease of installation (15%): how straightforward mounting is, and whether it requires tools or drilling.
  • Value for price (10%): price relative to size, materials, and effectiveness compared to similar products.

We score every product we cover against the same five criteria and the same weights. Scores are not generated automatically by a plugin and are not for sale.

2. What We Look At

Beyond the five scoring criteria, we track additional details for every product where the information is available:

  • Mounting type and pole/post diameter compatibility
  • Overall size and weight
  • Material (metal, plastic, or a mix)
  • Common owner complaints and known weaknesses
  • Current price range

3. How We Research

We research specifications and pricing from manufacturer listings and official retailer data, including the Amazon Product Advertising API, and review publicly available owner feedback and ratings to understand real-world strengths and complaints. We do not claim to have physically tested products in our own yards unless that’s genuinely the case, and we say so plainly when a claim is based on research rather than direct testing.

4. Why No Product Gets a Perfect Score Everywhere

Squirrel behavior, local squirrel size, and yard layout vary a lot from one location to another. A baffle that stops squirrels in one yard can still get beaten in another with more aggressive or larger squirrels, taller trees nearby, or a different mounting setup. Our scores reflect design quality, fit, durability, installation, and value, not a guarantee of results in every yard. We say so directly in every review, and we note who a product is not a good fit for.

5. Keeping Reviews Current

Every review shows a publish date and, when revised, an updated date. We revisit roundups periodically to check prices, availability, and whether a product has been discontinued or replaced by a newer model.
